Doctor JayBee's Blog took out time to meet up with this Young, Intelligent and Fast upcoming Cameroonian rapper who goes by the name IK Gix. Our infinite goal is to promote Cameroonian and African music, especially upcoming artists.
See how the Conversation with IK Gix went down.
DOCTOR JAYBEE'S BLOG: Firstly, Tell us, who is IK Gix?
IK GIX: Ik Gix is a Cameroonian by birth. Real name Ikome Ghislain I hail from the South West region,Buea to be more precise. I was born there but my dad is a francophone and I relocated to Douala and later on Yaounde for school. Ik Gix is the rapper/artist in me,when I rap or do any artistic stuff I'm Ik Gix. The name has gone so viral that most of my peers, friends and even relatives call me either Ik,Gix or Ik Gix and most at times don't address me by real name. Ik Gix is a young man who loves all genres of music, sober reflections, video games and football. I attach a lot of importance to my relationship with God and I live soberly as much as I can. I prioritize family and my relationship with fellow human beings. My mum is a big part in my life and definitely my biggest Blessing. I'm all about trying to put a smile on people's faces and making impacts to be remembered and that can edify the masses. I got a very close and limited circle of trust and I try living a simple life. I'm a fan of conscious Rap and Hip-hop,mostly lyrical rap. Football for me was one of those dreams I never could realise but I always somehow stick to it by playing soccer on weekends or regularly catching up with football seasons. So in a nutshell that's Ik Gix.
DOCTOR JAYBEE'S BLOG:Tell us about your 2 recent singles Real art persona and Souled out? What inspired you?
IK GIX:Starting up with Real Art Persona, well it's a song I wrote due to my perspective of what Rap music should be,nowadays Rap is almost synonymous with dope and sexually related content which in essence doesn't really touch the masses deep,New genres like Trap music have made Rap different from what it used to be,back then it was about lyrics filled with metaphors, smilies, rhymes which all vehiculated a clear message,so in essence in Real Art Persona I kinda define RAP saying the person who raps should be the Real Art Persona and should actually respect that art for its honourable,it shouldn't be a model of simplicity where u say anything on any beat and it goes, there's much more to rap than what is shown in the media today,so in essence the track was a way of defining rap music and giving a meaning to it
-Souled Out on the other hand is a song about people selling themselves to the devil for wealth, riches and recognition, notice I wrote SOULED like SOUL it was on purpose,in the first and second verses I explain what pushes people into that and explain how it goes on and in the last verse BIG STONE just denounced it and made it clear what to expect when u get into that, many people suffer from that and as artists it's our job to edify and make the masses aware cuz it's stuff that affects people round the world the message here is DON'T SELL OUT,it maybe tough, difficult, crazy out there but selling out won't help!that's the message behind SOULED OUT!
DOCTOR JAYBEE'S BLOG:Who is your Kamer celebrity idol?
IK GIX : Patrick Mboma. Unquestionably,he was my childhood hero I remember being a kid and getting so excited when he scored I just admired his soccer skills, humility and devotion for what he was doing. He's one of the few who have stayed out of scandals and controversy after leaving the limelight and I'll also respect him for that and for his humility.
DOCTOR JAYBEE'S BLOG:Nowadays Persons do music for the Passion, Money or Fame. Why do you do music?
IK GIX: I do music for the passion. Cuz I love it and cuz I can do it. The money and the fame are not my driving motives,if I'm Blessed with them fine,if I'm not still fine. To me that's not what matters, they are not my essential in life
DOCTOR JAYBEE'S BLOG: Who are the Cameroonian artistes with whom you look forward to work with and why?
IK GIX : This is an ever changing list but currently if the opportunity presents itself I would love to work with -DAPHNE cuz to me right now she's one of the most talented in the game, she's a great singer and also very versatile I think something great could come out of a collab with her,IK GIX feat DAPHNE how does that sound? GREAT if u ask me -KO-C cuz honestly in my opinion I believe he's arguably one of the best rappers in the country right now,he's got the flow and meaningful lyrics and it'll be cool to tear a beat apart with him on a track,-WES MADIKO he's a Legend who broke barriers and also has a unique sound which is immortal and which touches every generation or nation worldwide,I love world music and doing stuff with him would definitely be a dream come true-ANDRE MARIE TALLA,another Legend with gold on his fingers, his guitar touch is something everybody would want in his song -CHARLOTTE DIPANDA,I think her voice and gentle presence says it all.
DOCTOR JAYBEE'S BLOG:Who are your 3 favorite rappers from Cameroon?
IK GIX: First Krotal, for the Legacy, flow and for being one of the pioneers
Second Jovi for the skill and versatility
Third KO-C also for the skill and mostly for the novelty he brings to the game
DOCTOR JAYBEE'S BLOG:Stanley Snow and Jovi, who will you hang if you had to choose?
IK GIX : If I really have to choose it'll be Jovi.
DOCTOR JAYBEE'S BLOG:Who is your favorite Cameroonian producer?
IK GIX : Jovi Le Monstre
DOCTOR JAYBEE'S BLOG: what can you say about the current state of the Cameroonian music industry?
IK GIX : Well I think in recent years the Cameroonian music industry has improved in terms of video qualities with the upsurge of talented directors like Adrenaline,Nkeng Stephens amongst others, also in terms of the sound in general its better than say 10-15 years ago. The presence of YouTube channels,or music shows help the artists to gain exposure and as such help the growth of the industry. Personally I humbly think the artists can move even further with more edifying and solid content, especially in the lyrics I think that's what lacking to take this industry to a whole new level.
DOCTOR JAYBEE'S BLOG:Where do you see yourself in 3 years?
IK GIX :hmmmm that's difficult to say, life is unpredictable, about 10 years ago I didn't imagine myself ever making a track in a studio but now it's the case,I will be where God wants me to be in 3 years time and by His Grace I believe I'll be more stable and an even better person and rapper with a growing legacy in many other aspects equally
DOCTOR JAYBEE'S BLOG:Where do you get your musical inspiration from.
IK GIX :My inspiration comes from a whole lot of things, other songs, life situations, other artists. I don't have a fixed source,it all depends on what and how I analyse certain situations,or my opinions vis-a-vis certain issues and I put them into writing and it's done. I simply open myself to understanding and knowledge and I put it into writing
DOCTOR JAYBEE'S BLOG:Who are your favorite Cameroonian, African and International artists?
IK GIX :CAMEROONIAN:DAPHNE,JOVI,KO-C,CHARLOTTE DIPANDA,WES MADIKO,PASCAL,ANDRE MARIE TALLA,BEBE MANGA,ZANGALEWA
AFRICAN:M.I,SIMI,FALZ,MEIWAY,MAANIFEST,FALY IPUPA
INTERNATIONAL:TECH N9NE,NAS,BUSTA RHYMES,CELINE DION,GAROU,KENDRICK LAMAR...etc and many more can't name all of em in all the branches.
DOCTOR JAYBEE'S BLOG: Tell us more about your recent and future projects.
IK GIX:Cool I've just released my latest Single titled "Souled Out" which is a follow up to my first titled "Real Art Persona",before then I recorded a freestyle titled L.I.C and a track with my good friend Magic B entitled Meant To Shine,I've equally got other songs like Tears Of Fear and Earthly Crowns but presently I'm working on a track titled "MY STRUGGLES"..still in studio but its moving pretty well.
DOCTOR JAYBEE'S BLOG:Recently we have a good number of Anglophone artists putting French in their lyrics, do you think French language is necessary to "Blow"? what do you think?
IK GIX :Well I think music is something that should come from the soul and the inner most part of a human being, from the moment restrictions and obligations are placed it's no longer natural,I believe the artists should flow the way they feel it I don't agree with the stereotypes,in a nutshell what I'm saying is if an artist decides to blend both languages it's cool but it shouldn't be an absolute prerequisite in my humble opinion. It should be done not as a condition to blow but rather as a way to unite all Cameroonians be it Anglophones or francophones. And I also think the priority should be on EXCELLENCE by the artists not the language.
DOCTOR JAYBEE'S BLOG:Reniss Versus Daphne: Who will you marry? And who will you make your side chick?
IK GIX :hahahaha I'm not really into side chick stuff but I would choose Daphne.
